Many seniors live on fixed incomes and their pets are incredibly important companions that provide comfort, routine, and emotional support. For many older adults, a pet may be their closest daily companion, helping reduce loneliness and providing a sense of purpose. Through our senior citizen pet pantry, we’re working to ensure that seniors never have to make the heartbreaking choice between feeding themselves and feeding the pets they love. Research shows that roughly 20–25% of seniors share food from their own plates with their pets because they simply can’t afford pet food. While this comes from a place of love, it also highlights the very real financial strain many seniors face.
By providing pet food and basic supplies, we help ease that burden and keep beloved pets in the homes where they are happiest. Programs like this allow seniors to maintain the companionship that is so vital to their well-being while also ensuring pets receive proper nutrition and care. Just as importantly, supporting seniors in this way helps prevent pets from being surrendered to already crowded shelters. It’s a simple but powerful way to strengthen the bond between people and their animals while creating healthier outcomes for both.
